Pre-College Summer Programs: Dance

1. University of North Carolina School of the Arts- Commercial Dance Intensive

Location:

Winston-Salem, North Carolina

Eligibility:

2016-2017 high school freshmen, sophomores, juniors, and seniors (ages 13 through college)

Program Dates:

Session #1: June 18-July 1, 2017

Session #2: July 9-July 22nd, 2017

Priority Deadline:

Started accepting applications October 1, 2016 (accepted on a rolling basis, so apply ASAP)

Late Application Deadline:

April 1st, 2017

Admissions Notification:

Applicants will be notified of admissions status by April 1st, 2017 via email.

Scholarships:

There are no financial aid or scholarship opportunities at UNCSA and applicants are encouraged to find financial assistance through scholarships within their community.

Audition Requirement:

Dancers auditioning online, as well as those attending an open call, must complete the CDI Online Application form below with your basic information and audition video. Your audition video must be posted as an unlisted YouTube link and include:1-minute bio/personal interview about yourself and why you would like to attend CDI. Please include your name, age and hometown.2-3 minute solo in any style (choose what you look best doing, not what you think we want to see). This can be as formal as your competition solo onstage or as informal as an in-studio recording. If you are auditioning in person, fill in the video link box on the application with the words “open call” and the city name you will be auditioning in: Los Angeles, New York.If you are a CDI alum, you must submit a dance reel including at least one clip of you dancing post-CDI. This reel is your only audition requirement. Fill out the application form and paste your reel video in the link box

Sat. Feb. 18, 2017- NYC

Sat. Apr. 15, 2017- LA

Fun fact:

You will perform in 1-2 pieces alongside the UNCSA Comprehensive and Ballet dancers in a professionally produced show. This show weekend also will include a professional headshot session and culminate with an audition with a commercial casting agent. This program is focused on Jazz, Hip-Hop, Musical Theatre, and Contemporary styles. If interested in classical ballet or a cross-disciplinary modern dance/classical ballet approach, you can apply and audition for the Comprehensive Dance and/or Classical Ballet Intensives via a separate audition process.

2. University of the Arts Summer Institute- Dance Pre-College Program

Location:

Philadelphia, PA

Eligibility:

2016-2017 high school sophomores and juniors (if living on-campus); freshmen are allowed to apply, if they are commuter students

Program Dates:

July 10th-July 28th, 2017 (3-week session)

Priority Deadline:

March 25th, 2017

Late Application Deadline:

N/A

Admissions Notification:

April 21st, 2017

Application/Upload Fee:

$375 deposit due (will not be processed for students denied admission)

Tuition/Room & Board:

On-Campus: $3,115

Commuter: $1,875 (+ $195 for a Commuter Meal Plan)

Scholarships:

  • Full –Tuition Scholarship for Philadelphia residents via separate application (deadline: March 31st, 2017)

  • Partial Scholarship for non-residents via separate application (deadline: March 31st, 2017)

  • Ellis Trust for Girls- young women who reside in Philadelphia (single-parent homes and limited financial means) are eligible​

Audition Requirement:

Students may audition in person or submit an audition digitally as a URL to a website (i.e YouTube, Vimeo). Up to five minutes of a technical demonstration at the barre or center. A two-minute solo piece.

In-Person Audition Dates:

Norfolk, VA - March 16-19 for participants of the Regional High School Dance Festival.

Madison, WI - March 23-26 for participants of the Regional High School Dance Festival.

Philadelphia, PA - Saturday, March 25 at The University of the Arts Open House.

Fun fact:

With a wide range of electives and the ability to participate in two or more repertory projects ranging from jazz to hip-hop to ballet, you will undoubtedly get to sharpen your skills in your favorite style of dance, while having the chance to get exposed to a style that you may not have had the chance to try yet.

3. Boston Conservatory Musical Theater Dance Intensive

Location:

Boston, MA

Eligibility:

Students and professionals (ages 15-25) who possess a strong technical background in ballet and an interest in expanding into contemporary ballet, modern dance, and improvisation.

Program Dates:

July 24th-August 11th, 2017 (3-week session)

Final Deadline:

June 1st, 2017

Application/Upload Fee:

$90 (if you submit application before April 1st); $125 (if you submit application between April 2nd – June 1st)

Tuition/Room & Board:

Commuter rate: $1,550

On-campus rate: $3,500

Scholarships are available for Boston Public School students by contacting the Extension Programs Office (extension@bostonconservatory.edu) for more information.

Audition Requirement:

Live auditions can be scheduled throughout the country during their audition tour. Live auditions consist of both a ballet class (Barre, center and traveling combinations, including adagio, pirouettes, petit and grand allegro. Pointe work is optional.) and a modern dance class (Floor and center work, plus across the floor combinations, including jumps, falls, and turns. If applicable, showing of different modern techniques is encouraged.).

Video auditions are accepted as well and must include a 1-minute unedited dance piece in the style of musical theater, jazz, and/or ballet, highlighting technique and musicality; you are also encouraged to introduce yourself in this video and provide any information you would like to convey to the faculty.

Fun fact:

This year’s faculty includes BoCo alum and Broadway’s Nick Adams (Chicago, A Chorus Line, Gus and Dolls, La Cage Aux Folles, Priscilla, Queen of the Desert).

4. Indiana University Ballet Summer Intensive

Location:

Bloomington, IN

Eligibility:

High School students (ages 13-18)

Program Dates:

Session 1 (June 4th-June 10th, 2016; 1-week session)

Session II (June 11th-June 17th, 2016; 1-week session)

Session III (June 18th-June 24th, 2016; 1-week session)

Priority Deadline:

May 8th, 2017

Late Application Deadline:

N/A

Admissions Notification:

If you are accepted, you will be notified via email.

Application/Upload Fee:

$70 (non-refundable)

Tuition/Room & Board:

Tuition for Session I OR II OR III (one week): $725.00

Audition Requirement:

No physical audition required, but you must submit a resume, a recommendation letter from a current instructor, and a photograph in first arabesque (on point for women).

Fun fact:

One of their goals is to make you feel like you are taking ballet class as part of a traditional company. Also, the college faculty and the head of the program at Indiana are very involved and hands-on with the summer program.

Joey Dippel is a NYC-based dance teacher and choreographer, Dance Coach at Polish Your Passion, and a professional performer. He holds a B.F.A. in Musical Theatre from the University of Cincinnati’s College-Conservatory of Music, where he received the Lehman Engel Award for Achievement in Musical Theatre Dance. He has performed regionally with the Bucks Country Playhouse, the John W. Engeman Theater in Northport, Pioneer Theatre Company, Weston Playhouse, the Lincoln Theater in Napa Valley, and Marquee San Jose. He has assisted and danced for Otis Salid, Patti Wilcox, Lorin Latarro, Jeffry Denman, and Jacob Brent. As an independent choreographer, he has worked for the Broadway Dreams Foundation, CCM, the Musical Theatre Factory, the Kurt Weill Foundation, and Penguin Rep. He teaches and choreographs for the Children’s Musical Theatre of San Jose, Staten Island Academy, and his own donation-based dance class series called “Combo & a Cocktail."
