Below you will find of our favorites. We have compiled all of the important details about application deadlines, audition requirements, and scholarship possibilities, so you can compare programs and see what you like.

Pre-College Musical Theatre Summer Programs

 

1. Oklahoma City University High School Musical Theater

 

Program Location:

Oklahoma City, OK

 

Eligibility:

2016-2017 high school freshmen, sophomores, juniors, and seniors

 

Program Dates:

June 24th-July 8th, 2017 (2-week session)

July 8th-July 30th, 2017 (3-week session)

June 24th-July 30th, 2017 (5-week session)

 

Application Deadline:

Early Admission deadline: January 20th , 2017

2nd Admission deadline: February 20th, 2017

 

Late Application Deadline:

3rd Admission deadline: March 31st, 2017

 

Admissions Notification:

Notifications will be made at the email address you provide in your application.

 

If you submit by January 20th, you will be notified by February 1st.

If you submit by February 20th, you will be notified by March 15th.

If you submit of March 31st, you will be notified by April 13th.

Early application is strongly suggested.

 

Application/Upload Fee:

$40

 

Tuition/Room & Board:

2-week session: $2,800

3-week session: $4,200

5-week session: $6,200

 

Early Bird Discount: 15% off the entire tuition, if application is received by January 20th; early application will also make you eligible for financial aid.

 

Scholarships:

Limited financial aid is available by filling out the financial aid section on the summer registration form/submitting requested documents. Applying early might increase your chances of receiving financial aid.

 

If you were selected to participate in your state’s high school All-State Ensemble, you will receive a $150 scholarship. Make sure to indicate this honor on your registration form and send along photo-copied documentation of your selection for All-State Ensemble. Only ensembles organized the by the state’s Music Educators Association will be considered.

 

Audition Requirement:

Video audition that includes 2 songs (1 pre-1970 musical theater selection and one of your choice; neither song should be longer than 3 minutes; recorded only with live piano accompaniment) and 1 monologue (no longer than 1 minute).

 

Fun Fact:

The 2-week program features the same training as the longer programs. The only difference is the final performance. The 2-week program ends with a musical theater revue of solos and ensembles and the longer programs ends with a fully staged production. This year’s production is Urinetown.

2. MPulse Summer Performing Arts Institute- at the University of Michigan School of Music, Theatre & Dance- Musical Theatre Workshop

 

Location:

Ann Arbor, Michigan

 

Eligibility:

2016-2017 high school juniors (case-by-case consideration for current sophomores with exceptional ability & experience)

 

Program Dates:

July 16th to August 5th, 2017 (3-week session)

 

Priority Deadline:

January 27th, 2017 (notification email on February 24th) 

 

Late Application Deadline:

N/A

 

Admissions Notification:

Those who submit by the priority deadline will be emailed on February 24th; those who submit after the deadline will be notified on a rolling basis.

 

Application/Upload Fee:

$65 (non-refundable)

  

Tuition/Room & Board:

$3,620

 

Scholarships:

Limited Merit (everyone is automatically considered) and Need-Based (submit a copy of your family’s most recent tax return; documentation that describes extenuating circumstances or a statement from a guidance counselor are accepted) scholarship awards available.

 

Audition Requirement:

Video audition (separate clips) that includes 1 short monologue (no longer than a minute and a half from a full-length American play written after 1935), 2 songs (minimum of 32 bars, 1 song must be written before 1970). You may upload recorded clips of stage performances and dance excerpts as supplemental material.

 

Also, you must submit a video personal statement discussing your experiences in music or in theatre and how you became interested in attending MPulse. Optional uploads include recorded selections from stage performances and dance clips.

 

Fun fact:

Songs used for the acting techniques for song interpretation workshop will come from shows currently running on Broadway. Ability to read music is extremely valuable, so make sure to note music reading skills/instruments that you play/length of study in your resume and application.

3. Pace University Summer Scholars

 

Location:

New York, NY

 

Eligibility:

2016-2017 high school sophomores and juniors

 

Program Dates:

July 9th to July 23rd, 2017 (2-week session)

 

Application Deadline:

March 1st, 2017
 

Late Application Deadline:

April 15th, 2017 

 

Admissions Notification:

Few weeks after March 1st or April 1st (if you apply late) via the email address you provide in the application.

 

Application/Upload Fee:

$50 (nonrefundable deposit, which will be credited towards your tuition payment)

 

Tuition/Room & Board:

$2850 (w/ room & board)

 

Scholarships:
Consideration is based on an additional 500-word typed essay submitted with your application explaining why you should receive a scholarship.

 

Audition Requirement:

Video audition (separate clips) that includes 1 monologue (under 90 seconds from a contemporary, published, full-length play), 2 songs (contrasting 32-bar cuts), and an optional dance clip (from a show, competition, or solo dance performance).

 

Fun Fact:

The final presentation of the Musical Theater Audition Technique course will consist of an audition for a panel of casting directors and agents.

4. Baldwin Wallace Music Theatre Overtures

 

Location:

Berea, Ohio

 

Eligibility:

2016-2017 high school juniors

 

Program Dates:

July 2nd- July 7th, 2017 (1-week session)

 

Application Deadline:

March 31st, 2017 

 

Late Application Deadline:

N/A

 

Admissions Notification:

N/A

 

Application/Upload Fee:

$100 tuition deposit must accompany the application (if admitted, applied toward tuition; if not admitted then it is refunded)

 

Tuition/Room & Board:

$1750

 

Scholarships:

N/A

 

Audition Requirement:

Video audition that includes 2 songs (32 bar cuts, 1 ballad and 1 uptempo from musical theatre repertoire sung with accompaniment) and 1 monologue (1 minute, classical or contemporary drama)

 

Fun Fact:

Perfect option if you are trying to fit a summer program in with all of your summer college visits and family vacations. The intensive week of training is thorough and focused solely on the musical theatre college audition and taught by the main Baldwin Wallace Music Theatre department faculty.
